"consciousness vs consumerism"
As a former correctional officer on Death Row near Houston, TX, I left the law enforcement field in 2015. During my first year at The University of Texas at Arlington, I decided to protest the privatization of prisons. After working in the environment, I noticed the large numbers of incarcerated Black and Hispanic prisoners. A large number of corporations invested in these private prisons. I turned my sketch into a clay model and presented this as my major project for the class.
My professor at UTA emailed me and let me know that she submitted my work to an art contest, and then she asked if it was okay. I answered, "Of course, if you feel as passionate about it as I do, then I'm fine with that decision." My artwork received a 3rd place award in a juried show that some curators judged from the Dallas Museum of Art.
"A Beautiful Mind"
This work is a self-portrait that I created in 2019. I completed the original sketch in ink, and then it was digitally illustrated in Photoshop. This image is a look into my mind and how busy it is, so I prefer to "think with ink."
"MOTHER EARTH"
The creation is my rendition of "Mother Earth. I created the original images with pencil and used pencil and marker to add color.
"THA FAM"
The following creations are paintings and drawings I created in 2016-2020 while I attended UTA. It's a painting of me drawing my family. I used different mediums and experimented with pens, pencils, gouache paint, oil paint, pencils, and coffee.
"TURNIP THE BEET"
DJ Peel, MC Free Radical, and MC Immune Booster are characters from an animated band of vegetables I created in 2018. The characters are for an animated series for a Non-Profit Organization that feeds low-income kids.
